Earth Week Offers Lectures, Art, Exhibits
Samford University students will observe Earth Week 2008 with a series of programs April 14-19. All events are free and open to the public.
A display of earth-related art will be on display April 14-27 in the Samford Library.
Liturgy for the Earth will be the topic of a convocation on Tuesday, April 15, at 10 a.m. in Reid Chapel.
Several events will be held on Thursday, starting with a 10 a.m. convocation in Reid Chapel. R.G. Lyons, minister of Birmingham's Church Without Walls, will speak.
An earth-themed exhibit 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. on Ben Brown Plaza will feature displays by students, faculty and off-campus organizations.
Edwin Marty, founder and executive director of Jones Valley Urban Farms, will lead a forum sponsored by Samford's Brock School of Business at 1 p.m. in
Brock Forum.
Thursday's events end at 7 p.m., with the Samford Film Club's showing of the eco-friendly comedy "Go Further," at 7 p.m. in Beeson Divinity Hall North Room 305.
The week's observance continues on Saturday, April 19, with Alabama Environmental Education Consortium's Earth Day conference featuring Jared Diamond, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning book, Guns, Germs and Steel, at 9 a.m. in Wright Center. The conference is sponsored by Samford's Vulcan Materials Center for Environmental Stewardship and Education.
Finally, on Tuesday, April 22, Samford's foreign film series will present a film about forests in Quebec, Canada, L'erreur Boreale (Forest Alert) at 7:30 p.m. in the Sciencenter's Christenberry Planetarium. The public is invited free of charge.

The presentation coincides with worldwide observance of Earth Day on that date.
