The annual Samford University communications workshop for high school journalists
and their advisors will be Thursday, Sept. 11. The program is sponsored by
the Samford Department of Journalism and Mass Communication and the Alabama
Press Association.
The program will include a careers panel and sessions for students working
with newspapers, magazines, photojournalism and broadcasting. Sessions will
be led by educators and area professionals. Topics include staff organization
and management, feature writing, layout and design, advertising, sports coverage,
television weather and literary magazines.
Panelists who will discuss various journalism careers are Ross Mitchell, director,
Creative Marketing Group, University of Alabama at Birmingham; Fran Curry,
anchor/news reporter, NBC-13; Steve Millburg, senior editor, Coastal Living
magazine; and Felicia Mason, executive director, Alabama Press Association.
Registration check-in will begin at 7:45 a.m. in Dwight Beeson Hall lobby at
Samford. The program begins at 8:30 a.m. and will conclude at 1:50 p.m. Lunch
will be available on campus.
Cost is $3 per student. Advisors attend for free. For information and advance
