Religion Authority Phyllis Tickle to Deliver Samford Commencement
Phyllis Tickle, an authority on religion in America and contributing editor in religion for Publishers Weekly, will deliver the commencement address at Samford University Saturday, Dec. 15.
Tickle, author of 24 books and numerous articles on religion and spirituality, will speak during 10 a.m. ceremonies at Wright Center. A reception for graduates and their families will follow in Beeson University Center.
A total of 349 seniors will receive degrees including the first 12 graduates of Samford's new Doctor of Education degree program.
Tickle was formerly religion editor for Publishers Weekly, the international journal of the book industry. She is quoted frequently in national media outlets such as Newsweek, The New York Times and CNN, and has been featured on PBS's Religion and Ethics NewsWeekly and Odyssey Channel's The God Squad.
Her 1998 book, God-Talk in America, was an alternate selection for Book of the Month Club's One Spirit Book Club. She is author of a three-volume series released by Doubleday, The Divine Hours.
She has taught at Furman University, Rhodes College and the Memphis College of Art, where she also served as dean of humanities.
