Give to OMIC

An article published in Science by authors Greenwood and North stated, "The excellence of U.S. graduate education and the exciting and productive growth of our scientific enterprise over the past decades are at risk of being compromised if the scientific community does not turn its attention to the desperate need to enhance public understanding of our efforts and to promote improved kindergartenthroughcollege (K-16) education of our youth, some of whom will be the next generation of scientists."  The authors further state that "Many students enter college already deficient in the knowledge and skills of math and science, and many have never developed an interest in these topics.  Perhaps worse, many students develop a fear of science and math during their primary and secondary education."

By allowing students to experience science and the environment first-hand in the field, the Interpretive Center will serve as a tool for educators and students of Alabama.  We hope to influence an upward movement in attitude toward science and nature study.  Students will be introduced into the realm of the field ecologist through classroom and self-guided exhibits.  Participants will be introduced to scientific methods through hands-on sampling and data collection as well as laboratory analysis.

Interactive exhibits at the Oak Mountain Interpretive Center will be available not only to school groups, but also to the general public.  The exhibits will inspire visitors to develop an increased appreciation and understanding of the fragile environment of central Alabama.  The Oak Mountain Intrepretive Center has been established under the premise that by understanding our environment, people will be proactive in the preservation of the environment and,  consequently, more accountable with Alabama's natural resources.

We need your help to protect and preserve Alabama's natural history and beauty for our future generations.  Please consider becoming a supporter of OMIC so that we can work toward enhancing appreciation and understanding of our natural environment through education.  Please use the link below for your contributions to the center.  Be sure to reference your donation for the Oak Mountain Interpretive Center.
