Preparatory Music General Information
Merry Music Makers is a 45-minute class for 3- and 4-year-olds that meets once a week for 10 weeks. The class introduces the children to rhythm, melody, the music alphabet, and instruments of the orchestra, while providing an opportunity for musical creativity and expression. Class size is limited.
Preschool Piano classes for those beginning piano study uses the Faber Preschool Piano Method books with CD to form the core of an exciting music program designed for older 4's, 5-year-olds, and 6-year-olds who have not begun first grade. Very young students learn music fundamentals in a positive and creative environment where games and fun musical activities reinforce basic concepts. Students participate in a weekly 30-minute class (students perform for each other and concepts are introduced and reinforced) and a 15-minute private lesson (focuses more on the actual playing of the pieces and reviewing as needed). Class size is small, and parents are required to attend and participate in the lessons.
Private Instruction in Piano is available to students 6 years of age and older at all levels.
Private Instruction In Voice is available to 10 and 11 year old students (by audition only) and to students12 years old and older at elementary and advanced levels (requiring no audition).
Emphasis is placed on the instruction of repertoire and technique in both disciplines.
Musicianship Classes offer a time for the presentation and reinforcement of music theory, composition, history, appreciation, ear training, and performance. Students are strongly encouraged to enroll in a Musicianship Class geared to their age and level of ability. Games and fun activities reinforce musical concepts. Students who are taking private lessons are eligible for musicianship classes, which meet for 30 minutes weekly.
Private Instruction in Piano or Voice is available to adults. Adults are encouraged to participate in special events and recitals according to their personal wishes.
Students must complete an Adult Spring Registration Form (along with Credit Card Form if needed) and submit the annual registration fee to be officially registered in the Preparatory Department. Enrollment is made for the duration of one semester.
Approximately forty students are selected by audition once a year to represent Samford University Preparatory Music in the Birmingham community. Students are given the opportunity to perform for civic, church, and campus gatherings.
Around half of the students in the Honors Ensemble are awarded scholarships as determined by the judges at the auditions. The judges select the top performers, according to outstanding ability and achievement, to receive money to help pay for private lesson tuition through Samford University Preparatory Music.
Auditions for the Honors Ensemble and Scholarship Winners are held annually.

Frequent recitals afford students an opportunity to perform on a regular basis. Students may play in as many recitals as the instructor and parent feel they are prepared for. One recital each semester is designated for preschool children.
Performance Practices are informal performances/mini masterclasses where students come on a Sunday afternoon before the recital to perform for a Preparatory Music Instructor and other students playing that day. This is a fantastic way for private teachers, students, and parents to be able to make some last minute corrections before the "big" performance at the recital.
