Program Summary

Samford University’s Physics Department offers two options in engineering physics–a four-year course of study leading to a bachelor of science (B.S.) degree, or a dual degree including the Samford B.S. and an engineering degree from academic partners Auburn University, The University of Alabama at Birmingham or Mercer University.

The engineering physics major emphasizes the physical application of the foundational science of the 21st century, with opportunities to research, create and build alongside expert mentors. The curriculum is composed of classic physics courses presented in a modern technological setting. They include General Physics, Mechanics, Quantum Mechanics, Modern Physics, Optics, Thermal Physics, Electricity and Magnetism, Electronics, and Nuclear Physics. Small class sizes guarantee individual attention for each student.

Objectives & Goals

The Physics Department encourages and supports undergraduate research by majors. Engineering physics majors may join in the research being done by the physics faculty, or they may apply for summer research positions at other universities. Laboratory assistantships are also available for a variety of classes taught during Samford’s fall, spring and summer terms.

What Makes Us Different?

Samford University’s Physics Department resides in Propst Hall, dedicated in 2001. The Department continues to provide all Samford students with a firm understanding of this most fundamental of sciences and to introduce them to research opportunities at a nationally competitive level. The Christenberry Planetarium of Propst Hall is perhaps the most spectacular contribution to the Physics Department’s mission. Its 40-foot dome, custom-designed projection system and theater-quality sound immerse astronomy students in any facet of the universe they’re studying. The 95-seat planetarium is run by the planetarium director with the assistance of student staff, and opportunities exist for student involvement in employment and research.

Samford’s Physics Department is associated with the American Institute of Physics [AIP] through its student chapter of the Society of Physics Students [SPS]. The AIP is a membership corporation of major societies in the discipline of physics. The institute’s purpose is the advancement of the knowledge of physics throughout the world. As the world’s leading publisher of scientific journals, the AIP also acts as a clearinghouse for information about research, teaching assistantships and job opportunities. Over 7,500 students participate in 550 chapters of SPS on campuses across the country.

Physics is the foundation science of the 21st century. The new millennium is characterized by rapid technological development and ever-increasing orientation of the economy toward the physical sciences. This has led to a growing need for physical scientists. A physics education provides a set of skills that makes students valued employees in many settings and unlocks doors to employment opportunities throughout the world. The study of physics provides an excellent foundation for a scientific career. A basic understanding of physics is indispensable for students studying biology, geology, chemistry, and engineering.
