Lisa Gibbs is a former professional dancer with Southern Danceworks, a modern dance company directed by Teri Weksler of the Mark Morris Dance Group. After joining the company in 1994, she performed repertory programs and school shows in Birmingham and throughout Alabama. Through her work with Southern Danceworks, Gibbs performed several solos and duets and worked with gifted choreographers and world-renowned dancers such as Robert Battle, Keith Sabado, Germaul Barnes and Reggie Wilson. Gibbs has also performed with the Alabama Ballet under the direction of Wes Chapman, current artistic advisor of Ballet San Jose. Lisa continued a performance career with two emerging companies—Sanspointe, a modern dance company, and Arova, a contemporary ballet company, prior to retiring in 2011.
In the fall of 2002, Mrs. Gibbs was hired by Samford University to teach ballet and modern techniques. In the fall of 2005, she joined the Samford theatre staff full time. Gibbs now provides administrative assistance to the faculty and chair of the department, assists with publicity, and coordinates the summer theatre camps. Her teaching responsibilities include technique classes in ballet and modern, dance history, and choreography. As Coordinator of Dance, she hires professionals from the Alabama Ballet and other qualified instructors as adjunct teaching faculty. She is currently pursuing an Ed.D. in Higher Education Administration with the goal of creating a dance major degree program at Samford University.
Gibbs is a member of the Alabama Dance Council, the National Dance Educators Organization and CORPS de Ballet International. To further her own education, she continues to take classes in ballet and modern, and attends as many workshops as possible. In the summer of 2012, she began courses through the National Dance Educators Organization towards becoming a Registered Dance Educator.
