Samford University Arts Calendar 2007–08

Maps and directions

Greetings

Welcome to another outstanding arts season at Samford University! This year’s selection of art, music, theatre and dance events promises to be entertaining, thought-provoking and visually stunning. Samford students, faculty and guest artists fill the calendar with performances you won’t want to miss. While many events are free, some require tickets. The school offers a variety of season ticket options in addition to single-event tickets.

It is an exciting time in the life of Samford’s School of the Performing Arts. The university trustees have voted to gather art, graphic design, theatre, dance, music theatre, instrumental music (band and orchestra), church music, music education, theory, music history, vocal/choral music, piano, organ, composition, the preparatory music program and the Leslie Wright Fine Arts Center together as one unit, Samford’s School of the Arts. Faculty, students and alumni are working together to form the mission and objectives of a comprehensive and interdisciplinary learning environment, one that affords every student the opportunity to develop strengths across arts disciplines.

Come see how Samford University is preparing today’s artists to shape a better world for tomorrow.

Sincerely,
Dean Joseph Hopkins

Theatre and Dance

And the World Goes Round
by John Kander and Fred Eb
Sept. 14–15, 7:30 p.m.
Bolding Studio
This exceptionally lively review showcases one of musical theatre’s most important writing teams. Audiences will recognize showstoppers Cabaret, Mr. Cellophane, All that Jazz and Kiss of the Spider Woman.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest
by Daniel Wasserman, based on the novel by Ken Kesey
Oct. 25–27, 7:30 p.m.
Oct. 28, 2:30 p.m.
Harrison Theatre
Dale Wasserman’s stage adaptation of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest made its Broadway premiere in 1963, one year after Ken Kesey’s bestselling novel was published. Since then, the play has had two New York revivals and was made into the classic 1975 film starring Jack Nicholson. The play tells the tale of McMurphy, a convicted felon, who has himself declared insane to get out of prison and into a more comfortable mental hospital. He soon finds that Nurse Ratched runs the asylum with an iron fist. McMurphy challenges the rules and makes a name for himself.

Twelfth Night
by William Shakespeare
Nov. 29–30, 7:30 p.m.
Dec. 2, 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
Brock Recital Hall
The Bard’s classic tale of mistaken identity, romance and redemption is set in the mysterious kingdom of Illyria. One of Shakespeare’s most accessible plays, Twelfth Night brings great storytelling, music and dance together for a charming seasonal delight.

Oleanna
by David Mamet
Feb. 7–9, 7:30 p.m.
Feb. 10, 2:30 p.m.
Bolding Studio
“As if ripped right from the typewriter, it could not be more direct in its technique or more incendiary in its ambitions,” said theatre critic Frank Rich. A university professor standing for tenure is accused of harassment by a female student, and neither of their lives can ever be the same. No play written in the past 25 years has provoked more argument and generated more self-examination.

Samford University Dance Concert
Feb. 28–March 1, 7:30 p.m.
March 2, 2:30 p.m.
Harrison Theatre
Enjoy the extraordinary talents of Samford’s burgeoning dance program. The dance concert has become a highlight of the Samford arts season.

Copenhagen
by Michael Frayn
March 27–29, 7:30 p.m.
March 30, 2:30 p.m.
Christenberry Planetarium
Frayn’s acclaimed masterpiece grapples with issues of history and politics while remaining exceptionally entertaining. In a departure from the author’s brilliant comic turns such as Noises Off, Frayn focuses on a historic event—the visit made by German physicist Werner Heisenberg to Neils Bohr during World War II in 1941. The two physicists, who had collaborated for so long on the development of quantum theory, were on opposite sides. Bohr was half-Jewish and a citizen of occupied Denmark. Heisenberg was a professor at Leipzig, but unknown to Bohr, he had become head of the Nazi regime’s project to harness atomic energy. When the two brilliant, quirky minds come together, the nature and ethics of humanity begin to unfold.

A Piece of My Heart
by Shirley Lauro
April 10–12, 7:30 p.m.
April 13, 2:30 p.m.
Bolding Studio
These true stories of six courageous women sent to Vietnam depict their struggle to make sense of a war that irrevocably changed them and a nation that shunned them. This powerful work contains the music and soul of a tumultuous era in America’s history.

Cinderella
by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein
May 1–3, 7:30 p.m.
May 4, 2:30 p.m.
Harrison Theatre
Musical theatre’s most beloved writing team originally penned this play for a 1957 television production featuring young Julie Andrews. Since that debut, the play has been produced throughout the world and revived twice for television (in 1965 with Leslie Ann Warren and in 1997 with Brandy Norwood in the title role). Samford University Theatre for Young Audiences is pleased to bring this classic to your family.
