On Thursday Sept. 1, 2005 at 3:00 pm Samford University Greek Life will formally announce their newly formed Adopt- A- School relationship with Birmingham School Systems' McElwain Elementary. The press conference which will be held on the McElwain campus in the library will detail the three year commitment Samford University Greek Life is making to the school. The commitment will include an after school tutoring program, assistance with PTA fund raisers, one on one mentoring for students, the meeting of facility needs of the school, and efforts to update technological support within the classrooms. Greek Life at Samford University encompasses twelve social fraternities and sororities including Lambda Chi Alpha, Pi Kappa Phi, Sigma Chi, Sigma Nu, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Omicron Pi, Chi Omega, Delta Sigma Theta, Phi Mu and Zeta Tau Alpha. In the midst of continuing public struggles and difficulties for Birmingham City Schools, Samford University Greek Life realizes that by providing long term substantial financial and personnel resources a positive difference can be made in the success of the school. The three year program will allow the leadership of McElwain and Samford University to evaluate the program each year making changes as needed to provide measurable positive results in the educational experience for all children at the school. Samford University students and administrators and McElwain School administrators, teachers and students will participate in the press conference and will be accessible for questions from local media outlets. Please join us at this noteworthy event to highlight positive community involvement within our schools.
