Operational Definition

As a writer, a Samford student will develop over time. Upon entrance, s/he is likely to use a truncated process often limited to two drafts at best and very little revision. Upon graduation, the student should employ a fully elaborated process of writing, including pre-writing, planning, search strategies, revising and editing. In particular, students need to be aware of their own writing process and should revise their own texts both in response to the suggestions of others and independently. When they do this, they can write well in a variety of genres, adapting appropriately to differences in conventions and disciplines. Their texts are characterized by a strong sense of purpose, responsiveness to and precision for their audiences, and depth of thought. At their best, these texts are insightful, well crafted, unique, and edited.
