The Force is With Samford Debate!

Nov 1, 2006

The Samford Debate team travelled to Wayne State University in Detroit this weekend, sweeping up numerous awards in the Varsity and Junior Varsity divisions.  The squad dressed up as Star Wars characters on the second day of the tournament, not only winning third place in the costume contest, but illustrating that "the force" is truly with Samford debate.

Josh Smith and David Williams once again reached the final four of the Junior Varsity division, defeating teams from the University of Michigan at Dearborn, Case Western, John Carroll University, and Notre Dame.  Josh & David amassed an impressive 5-1 preliminary record.

In the Varsity ranks, the team of Clark Bowers & Nick Agnello along with the team of Erin Ramsey & Logan Gramzinski both reached the elite eight of the tournament.  Agnello was named the top individual speaker of the over sixty debaters in the Varsity division, the first time Agnello has won a top individual speaker award at a Varsity tournament.  Great job, Nick!  Logan Gramzniski was named the tenth speaker, and Clark Bowers was the 12th speaker.

The squad defeated teams from last year's national champion squad of Michigan State University, the University of Michigan, John Carroll University, Michigan Dearborn, Western Illinois, Georgia State, Miami of Ohio, Case Western, and multiple time national champion Northwestern University.

The squad also had one of its most successful individual days on day one of the tournament, amassing an overwhelming 11 wins with only one defeat on the first day of the tournament.  The tournament proves that Samford debate is a force to be reckoned with not only in the SEC, but when the squad travels far away to debate other teams in their home regions.

The squad travels this weekend to James Madison University to face the best the East Coast has to offer.

Go Bulldogs!
