Samford University complies with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) as amended. The ADA prohibits discrimination against a “qualified individual with a disability”. A disability is defined as an impairment that substantially limits a major life activity such as walking, seeing, hearing, breathing, learning, working etc. For purposes of a post secondary environment a “qualified individual with a disability” is one who with or without accommodations can perform the essential functions of an academic program or course. Upon request, the University will make reasonable accommodations in the learning environment or in the location or way that a class is structured to enable a person with a disability equal access. Consideration shall be given to the University’s judgment as to what functions of an academic program or course is essential. The University is not required to provide a requested accommodation if it would require the removal of an essential function, a fundamental alteration of the nature of the program, require the lowering of a performance standard, would pose a direct threat to the health or safety of others or would result in a diminution in the value of the degree to be awarded.
Disability Resources (DR), located in the University Center, Room 205, serves as the central campus resource for students with disabilities. Working in partnership with students, faculty, and staff, the goal of DR is to provide a physically and educationally accessible University environment that ensures an individual is viewed on the basis of ability, not disability. DR staff members work individually with students to determine appropriate accommodations that will enable all students to have access to the same programs and services, and to have students’ academic performance evaluated, to the extent possible, without the limiting effects of a disability.
