Dr. Steward earned her B.A. from Austin College and her M.A. and Ph.D. from Rice University. Her first field of specialization is Modern Poetry. She has published numerous articles on the British poet Stevie Smith, and in 1999 won the Kirby Award for her article, "Ceci n'est pas un Hat: Stevie Smith and the Refashioning of Gender."

She also specializes in Literary Theory. Her participation in The School of Criticism and Theory at Dartmouth College established the foundation upon which she teaches Approaches to Literature at Samford. She has presented papers on feminist theory, narratology, and film theory. Currently, she is collaborating with Asian Studies scholars to introduce the ancient Chinese practice of Poetic Cultivation into American literary criticism.

Off campus, Dr. Steward writes a monthly column for Birmingham Magazine, studies Tai Chi at the Blue Dragon Academy in Hoover, and raises two young sons and an old cat.
