As a faculty member begins the grant seeking process, the following frequently asked questions and responses may be helpful.
In seeking project funding, how much lead time should I plan?
Grant seekers must look at projected time frame needed to research, write, submit and receive needed funding. Needed lead time should be viewed from two perspectives:
- Research through application submission: 6 to 12 months;
- Research through funder response: 9 to 18 months.
As I begin researching grant opportunities for my project, how can I find potential funding sources?
- The Academic Grants Office webpage Resource Links is a good beginning place to research funding opportunities.
- Other assistance may be derived from colleagues and discipline-focused publication announcements.
- When possible, the Academic Grants Office will assist in researching prospective funding sources. Contact the Grants Office at Ext. 2791.
I have never pursued a grant from an outside source. Where do I begin?
How do I obtain the institutional information required on the application?
- Samford's institutional history, governance, faculty and student statistics, and special recognitions and awards are available online through the Institutional Research website at: http://www.samford.edu/instresearch/index.html
- The Academic Grants Office will assist with other requested information such as: audited financial reports, IRS documents, Board of Trustees list, and administrative signatures.
What is Samford's overhead, or indirect cost, rate?
