Changing Your Major
On average, 70% of all students change
their major at least once in their college
career, so don't feel like you are the only one! As you mature, it is
to be expected that your interests and career goals should evolve. The
counselors in the Career Development Center can help you evaluate whether
another major would suit your skills and interests better. Here are some
questions a career counselor might ask you:
- Do you know all of the career options for your current major?
- Have you talked with someone or had experience in the career field
you are currently interested in?
- Do you have enough hours in your current major to minor in it should
you choose to change?
The Career Development Center has several tools
available to help you make this decision.
- Individual appointments with career counselors
- Self-Directed Search Interest Inventory -
Matches skills and interests with Samford majors and potential career
fields
- Do What You Are -
Relates your personality preferences to work styles and career choices
- "What can I do with a degree in..." - Printouts that detail career options
for each major
- Career Research Library - Books on
majors, as well as on specific career fields
- Alumni Database - Provides contact information for Samford alumni in a variety of career fields
- Career Planning Listserv - Provides
announcements and items of interest for career exploration
Call the Career Development Center to schedule an
appointment with one of the counselors, either Heather Mitchell or Brent
Latta (205-726-2980).
To officially change your major, you must fill out
a "Change of Major" form. These can be obtained from the Student
Records Office.
