Requirements for Graduation with Honors (Revised 11.27.2007)1. Freshman Honors students must take three of their core curriculum courses for Honors credit. These include Honors sections of UCCA 102, UCCP 101, and UCCP 102. 2. Honors students must take any two of the following: serving as a teaching assistant for Samford Scholars class (The Greek and Roman Heritage, Christian Antiquity to the Renaissance, Reformation and Enlightenment, Modernity and Postmodernity), a pre-approved upper level (300-400) outside major/minor, a second honors seminar, and/or a gen-ed Honors class. 3. Honors students must take one of the following: an interdisciplinary honors seminar or an Honors designated upper level course (outside major/minor). The honors seminar is an interdisciplinary seminar on a selected topic with emphasis on reading, discussion, and research. It may be taken more than once. 4. Honors students must complete a senior honors project/thesis. They may select from the following options: an honors thesis (in addition to department requirements), a proposal/presentation of their department thesis or research submitted to and/or presented at a recognized academic conference, or a paper based on a department thesis or research submitted to and/or published by a recognized academic journal. All of the above must be approved and sponsored by a faculty member within the applicable department. 5. Four times each semester a Speaker's Corner colloquium is hosted by the Association of Honors Students. The format is a lecture or book review by a faculty member, student, or an off-campus expert. All Samford students are invited to attend. Honors students must attend at least two per semester. Successful completion of these five requirements plus maintenance of a GPA of 3.500 or higher leads to an Honors degree. |
