Internships: The Road to Success
Students may intern in a variety of fields in London. Those who
choose to do so expand their experience to that of a British resident
instead of just a tourist. These students not only gain valuable
work experience and an outstanding addition to their resumes, but
they also have an opportunity to immerse themselves in the culture
by working side by side with British citizens.
Eligibility: The students applying for internships
must be accepted to the program. Students are required to have a
minimum 3.0 GPA. Exceptions to this requirement must be approved
by the student's advisor, department head or dean, and the London
Programs director.
Types of Internships: Students have interned in
a variety of places, such as : economic policy-making agencies,
political parties, schools, churches, a recording studio, museums,
law offices, businesses, accounting firms, a publishing house, a
doctor's office, and one sports-related site. If the London Office
does not have a contact that corresponds to a student's major or
area of interest, the student may find his/her own site subject
to the approval of the London Office (see "Obtaining
an Internship" below).
Application Procedure:
-
The student should obtain an application
from the London Programs Office. The application must be filed
with the London Programs Office by the specified deadline. Applications
should be accompanied by a resume which includes GPA, work experience,
and educational background and by letters of recommendation.
-
The three letters of recommendation should
include one from someone who knows the quality of the student's
academic work (advisor, professor, department head), one from
a work supervisor, and one from someone who speaks to the student's
character and acceptance of responsibility. The recommendation
should be a general letter of recommendation and should not
refer to a specific internship placement. Letters should be
sent to the London Programs Office.
-
The student must be approved for serving
an internship by the director, professor-in-residence, and the
appropriate faculty member or administrator from the student's
academic area.
No guarantees of placement are made by the London Programs Office
to students regarding internships.
Obtaining an Internship:
Consult with the London Programs Office for existing internship
sites. In areas where we have not had Samford students previously
placed, the student must ultimately be responsible for obtaining
his/her own internship. In some cases, the London Programs Office
may have contacts where qualified students could perhaps be placed.
In other situations, the London Programs Office may be able to
recommend contacts and possible positions based on past experience.
Departments and schools may be able to help the student with specific
positions and contacts or with suggestions.
