Semester Abroad

See The World From A Different Perspective: Study in London for the Semester

The Semester Abroad program offers students an opportunity to study for the fall or spring semester in London, taking 12-14 credits. A two week travel break may be extended for additional time abroad.

Semester Schedule: The Semester Abroad program is 14 weeks in length, consisting of one week of orientation, eleven weeks of classes, and a two week travel break. Students may elect to extend travel time beyond the group departure dates for a small deviation charge .

Eligibility: Students must be currently enrolled as full-time students at Samford University (minimum of 12 credits during the semester preceding participation), have a minimum 2.0 GPA, must not be on academic or disciplinary probation, and must have sophomore standing or above at the time of participation. Students must have met all prerequisites or requirements for London classes in which they enroll. Students must maintain these standards prior to departure and throughout the term in London, and they must abide by participation and housing rules. Failure to do so will result in dismissal from the program and a return home at the expense of the student.

Planning Ahead: Because of the nature of the program and the small number of participants in a semester, class offerings are limited; therefore, it is important that students interested in the program plan their curriculum in advance to take the best advantage of London course offerings. Interested students should consult with their advisors and with the London Programs Office early in their Samford careers.

Available Courses: Students must register for LOND 360: Modern Britain plus an interdisciplinary course taught by Samford faculty. Students may choose from other offerings to enroll in a minimum of 12 or a maximum of 14 credits:

  • AN UPPER-LEVEL, CROSS-LISTED COURSE taught by Samford Professor-in-Residence. (Offering varies each semester). Required course for all participants. FOUR CREDITS.
  • LOND 360 MODERN BRITAIN. Interdisciplinary study of British history, culture, and life taught by British lecturers and the Samford professor-in- residence. Required course for all participants. Course will satisfy social science requirement in General Education. FOUR CREDITS.
  • LOND 200 THE BRITISH THEATRE. Course taught by a British professor. Includes attendance at London theatre productions. Satisfies Fine Arts requirement in General Education. TWO CREDITS.
  • LOND 201 MUSIC AND ART IN LONDON: A FINE ARTS DIRECTED INDEPENDENT STUDY. An independent study with visits to London museums and musical events. (Admissions not included.) Satisfies Fine Arts requirement in General Education. TWO CREDITS.

Internships: Internships in London offer not only an opportunity to explore areas related to the student's major, but also an immersion in the culture outside the classroom. Students must have a 3.0 GPA and approval of the academic department and the London Programs director. Selection for placement is competitive. Application forms and procedural details are available in the London Programs Office. More information.

Cost and Activities Included: A comprehensive fee includes 12 credits tuition, round- trip airfare from Atlanta, accommodations at Daniel House for 14 weeks, daily continental breakfast, weekly meal allowance, planned day excursions in the U.K., a weekend in Paris, and eight nights at London theatres.
