Spring Term 2006

DATES: January 23, 2006 – May 5, 2006

COST: Program fee: $8,700 Tuition: $5,852 (12 credit hour @ $486 per credit hour). Total cost: $14,532. The program fee includes roundtrip airfare from Birmingham, airport transfers, accommodation at London Study Centre, continental breakfast daily and meal allowance of 80 GBP, planned excursions, Paris weekend via Eurostar, eight theatre plays of professor’s choice.

REQUIRED COURSES:

Students must register for LOND 360 and at least one Samford faculty course

LOND 360.01x – Modern Britain (4 credits – required course): An interdisciplinary study of British life from the perspectives of history, architecture, literature, economics, political science, religion, art and sociology. Team taught by British lecturers and Samford Professor-in-Residence. Course will satisfy social science requirement in General Education.

Professor Ginger Frost - Fin-de-Siecle London 399.01x, HIST/ENGL/JMC/POLS/THEA (cross-listings subject to approval). Explores dynamic period of crisis in London from 1884 to 1914. Emphasizes the beginnings of the welfare state, women’s suffrage campaigns, challenging novels and theatre, imperial wars, and poverty in the East End in the age of Jack the Ripper. 4 credits

Professor Angela Ansah- Comparative Research 399.02x, EDUC/NTDT/COMS/CLAS/PSYC/ESSM (cross-listings subject to approval). This course provides the opportunity for students to make comparisons between two or more different cultures or cultural areas in relation to an academic discipline. Students will gain a fundamental understanding of both quantitative and qualitative research and will put into practice different research techniques and analytical methods to produce high-quality contemporary, transnational research of academic relevance. 4 credits

OPTIONAL COURSES:

Students may enroll in these courses to reach the required 12 credit hours. Students with a 3.0 GPA plus approval of the director of the London Programs and their advisor may take up to 14 credit hours. There is an additional tuition charge for credits above 12 hours.

LOND 200 – The British Theatre :Lectures by leading practitioners, a backstage theatre tour, and eight nights at the theatre bring British theatre to life. This course satisfies the theatre appreciation requirements. Taught by Samford staff and British lecturers. (2 credit hours)

LOND 201 – Music and Art in London: A Fine Arts directed independent study. The art resources of London are the basis for this directed independent study. Course will include a variety of field assignments. This course satisfies a Fine Arts requirement. (2 credit hours)

INTERNSHIPS:

A limited number of internships are available in business, legal, political, theatre, media and other professional settings. Details are available from the London Programs Office. Must have 3.0 GPA or higher. (2-4 credit hours)

REGISTRATION INFORMATION:

Online registration begins on September 28, at 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for Seniors and Juniors (58+ credits) and September 29, at 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for Sophomores (57 credits and below). Freshman must have sophomore standing (26 completed credits) by the time of participation. If spaces remain available after these dates registration will remain open.
