For FacultyService-Learning 101:On May 24, 2007 from 8:00-noon, thirteen Samford faculty/staff participated in an interactive workshop to find out what service-learning is, how higher education most commonly defines the pedagogy, and specific ways service-learning can be incorporated into teaching. Some faculty participants have already taught service-learning courses and shared their experience, and specific areas covered by Lynette M. Sandley, Director of Service-Learning, SIM included:

Birmingham 101:Samford in Mission sponsored Birmingham 101 on January 17, 2006. The event included a historical tour of East Birmingham led by Samford alumnus, David Fleming, and lunch at East Lake United Methodist Church followed by a panel of community representatives and Samford students. Panelists included Sally Allocca or P.E.E.R., Inc. in East Lake, David Fleming of Main Street Birmingham, Rev. Stephen Manyama of the Family Worship Center in East Lake, Jenilyn Swett of YouthWorks, Amanda Arvidson, student leader of BRICK, Lyndsay Cogdill and Abby Hebert, student leaders for the Samford Habitat for Humanity Chapter, and Rachel Lowery, student leader of Ville Crewe. The purpose of Birmingham 101 was to acquaint faculty with Samford’s history in East Lake and opportunities for service and work that “deepen the exploration of mission and vocation,” as called for in the SIM grant proposal. Lynette M. Sandley, Director of Service-Learning, SIM, organized the event. Samford faculty, staff, and administrators who participated included David Bains (Religion), David Chapman (A & S), Doug Clapp (Classics), Billye Currie (Core), Myrtis Johnson (Education), Mary Monk-Tutor (Pharmacy), Kathy Parnell (Core), Jane Phares (Core), April Robinson (Student Ministries), Dan Sandifer-Stech (SIM), Lynette Sandley (SIM), Jennifer Taylor (Davis Library), and Angulus Wilson (SIM). Elizabeth Wells (Davis Library Special Collection) compiled a brief history of East Birmingham and Howard College for the event. |
