Mission Statement

Service-Learning embraces the mission of Samford University “to nurture persons in their development of intellect, creativity, faith, and personhood. As a Christian university, the community fosters academic, career, and ethical competency while encouraging social and civic responsibility, and service to others.”

Service-Learning is an innovative teaching and learning method which raises students’ sensitivity to local and global issues while meeting academic objectives. Service-Learning is an opportunity to extend community beyond Samford’s campus. Students participate in organized service activities that meet identified community needs while providing information or experience which help students meet course objectives. Through reflection on the service experience, students “gain further understanding of course content, a broader appreciation of the academic discipline, and enhanced sense of civic responsibility” (Bringle and Hatcher).
