Pi Chapter Philanthropies
From the Chairman
The Pi Chapter understands the importance
of giving back to the community. Each year brothers volunteer many hours
of their collegiate career to give back to the community that has provided us
with so many opportunities. Our national philanthropies include Children’s
Miracle Network, which has been a part of the Sigma Chi Fraternity since 1992,
as well as the Huntsman Cancer institute, which was adopted in 2005. Each
year the Pi Chapter holds Derby Days in a concentrated effort to raise thousands
of dollars for each philanthropy. In 2006 we raised $9,0000 and this year
a goal of $15,000 has been set. However, we feel than we can raise even
more money with the help of both brothers currently active in the fraternity
as well as alumni. We are working to institute a work program in which
a group of brothers will come to your house and do odd jobs in order to help
raise money for both our national philanthropies. More information will
be provided in later newsletters.
We also understand
the importance of doing work closer to home. We are currently involved
in numerous opportunities around the city of Birmingham. Each week our
brothers serve at McElwain elementary school through tutoring, cleaning, assembling
a playground for the children, or doing yard work. Brothers have also been
seen going to churches to minister to children, cheering on runners in the Mercedes
Marathon, building houses for Habitat for Humanity, supporting those riding in
the Old Howard 100 bicycle race, and many other events.
This year we hope to focus more on giving back to the alumni who have helped make the Pi
Chapter what it is today. Many of you have had such a positive influence
on us, and we would like to give back by serving you. Please feel free
to send me a message with your name and contact information, and we hope to get
some people out to assist you soon.
