Sigma Phi Epsilon supports a national member development program called the Balanced Man Program (BMP). This program was designed in the late eighties by the leaders of SigEp in order to eliminate the many problems that had developed out of the traditional pledge system. Although SigEp has not forced the BMP on individual chapters, many chapters have adopted the program because of its progressive and positive thinking. Today over 60% of all SigEp chapters are Balanced Man chapters. It focuses on two main principles sound mind and sound body. The Balanced Man program seeks to help new members reach their full potential in both of these areas. The Balanced Man Program is carried out in three parts. When a bid is signed that person becomes a Sigma. This is the first step in the program. The Sigma period lasts four to six weeks. After this time period the person becomes a Phi, and then an Epsilon. With the Balanced Man Program when a bid is signed the person is automatically given the same rights as a brother. This includes a vote in chapter affairs and participation in all chapter functions, both social and philanthropic. Alabama Gamma actively implements the Balanced Man Program and strives to build stronger men through this program.
