Created with initial funding support from The Greater Birmingham and Robert R. Meyer Foundations, BACHE is a collaborative approach by which the five, four-year colleges and universities in the Birmingham area enhance the educational opportunities of their students in a prudent economic fashion. BACHE initiatives focus on programs that are improved through inter-institutional cooperation or that all institutions may not offer. The participating institutions are: Birmingham-Southern College, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Miles College, the University of Montevallo and Samford University.

Cooperative Course Exchange
The Cooperative Course Exchange Program of BACHE expands course offerings available to students and eliminates gaps that occasionally occur within programs on individual campuses.

Full-time students who are in good academic standing at their home campus may take a course at another BACHE site at no additional cost. In most cases, such courses are not available at the home campus and are taken elsewhere to improve the student's program and overall educational experience. Written permission from an academic advisor and the campus BACHE coordinator are required.

Students benefit from exposure to diverse learning communities and courses as varied as Speech-Language Pathology, Ballet and Jazz dance, Marine and Environmental Sciences, Japanese, Arabic, Chinese, Swahili, Military Science, International Marketing, Journalism and Media courses, and Retail and Design Merchandising.

Asian Studies Program
As the world looks to Asia for new markets and opportunities in the 21st century, preparation in Asian Studies is an important undergraduate foundation. Created from courses taught on the five BACHE campuses, the interdisciplinary Asian Studies curriculum is useful for graduate study and careers in:

Banking
Cultures and Traditions
Education
Government Service
International Business
Journalism
Law
Marketing

The curriculum covers East, South, and Southeast Asian cultures, traditions, contemporary problems, and the complex relationships between Asian nations and between Asia and the West. Japanese, Chinese, and Hindi language courses are offered in several formats on three of the member campuses. For additional information about the Asian Studies Program, contact Samford's Dr. John Mayfield at 726-2858.

Foreign Language Courses
BACHE institutions cooperate to strengthen traditional classroom instruction in upper level foreign language courses. Advisors in the home campus foreign language departments can assist students in accessing off-campus classes that benefit their programs. Lesser-taught languages such as Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, and Swahili may be accessed at either Samford University or UAB through self-instructional tutorial study. For additional information call the Samford Department of World Languages and Cultures at 870-2747.

Library Cooperation
Students, faculty, and staff at BACHE institutions may access the resources of all the member libraries by simply presenting a valid I.D. It is best for students to first discuss research projects with the faculty and reference staff at their home library before using member libraries. The rules and regulations of the lending library govern and must be respected.

Registration
To register in the BACHE program at Samford, please contact Sara Gould in Students Records at 726-2906.
