User IDs, PINs, & Passwords Used in Banner Self-Service

The following table provides an overview of the usernames, PINs, and passwords needed to access parts of the Banner Self-Service system (for such things as Web registration).

ITEM	FORMAT	DESCRIPTION	LEVEL	SAMFORD DESIGNATION (aka)
Samford Username	Up to 8 characters. Typically first initial + middle initial + last name (or beginning of last name until a max of 8 characters has been reached). (May include a number if the letter combo is already in use.)	Primary Samford University login identity	Public	Samford Username (Used to login to most Samford screens; also the beginning of student's e-mail address.)
Samford University ID (aka Banner "User ID")	9-digit number assigned to each person and vendor. (All Samford Banner UserIDs begin with a "9.")	Banner-specific identity	Public	SUid or Banner ID (Students should memorize their Banner ID numbers as these will be required on most forms used by the University.)
Samford Password	Randomly-generated six-character alphanumeric string	Used with the Samford Username to authenticate logins	Private	Samford Password
Banner PIN	Corresponds with Samford Password	Equivalent to a password	Private	Samford Password
Banner Alternate PIN	6-digit number assigned within Banner to allow Web registration	Used to allow student to register for classes after advisement	Private* (Known only to student and student's advisor)	Alternate PIN (PINs will change with each academic term, although Jan Term & Spring share the same PIN [begins w/a 2] and Summer I & II share the same PIN [begins w/a 5]. ID = Identification
PIN = Personal Identification Number
SU = Samford University
Banner Self-Service = Banner Student Information System as accessed through the portal by clicking on the Banner tab
