Samford Auxiliary
See auxiliary.
scholarships and fellowships
Capitalize only those words that are part of the full official
name of a scholarship or fellowship—scholarship or fellowship may
or may not be included in that package. Below are some examples
of well-known scholarships and fellowships.
Rhodes Scholarship, Rhodes Scholar
Fulbright Scholarship, Fulbright Scholar
Graduate Council Fellowship, Graduate Council Fellow
Truman Scholarship, Truman Scholar
Scripture, scripture
Capitalize when referring to the Bible; lowercase in all other
instances.
seal, Samford University
Use the seal only on official documents of Samford University.
There are two rules for its use:
- It must always be printed in a single color. For example,
it is not acceptable to print the type in one color and the lamp
in another.
- It may not be altered in any way, either by changes or
additions to the seal itself or by enclosing the seal in another
logo or other art.
The seal is a licensed trademark of Samford University and can
be used on commercial items only with the permission of the vice
president of business affairs and general counsel.
seasons
Do not capitalize, unless personified.
The first day of spring is only a week away.
In just two weeks, Spring will work her magic upon the earth!
semesters
Do not capitalize the names of semesters or academic sessions or
periods (such as registration, orientation or schedule pickup),
with the exception of Jan Term.
semicolon
Many writers and readers don't understand the semicolon. For that
reason, it's usually best to limit its use. For separating items
in a series, the semicolon is sometimes the best option, particularly
when space prohibits use of a vertical or bulleted list. But
to indicate a break in sentence flow, consider using either the
dash or a comma and conjunction.
Use the semicolon to separate items in a series when they are
long and complex or when at least one of them involves internal
punctuation.
slash
Use the slash to indicate alternatives, not combined ideas:
Wrong: He was the 1997 Student/Scholar of the Year.
Right: He was the 1997 Student-Scholar of the Year.
Social Security number, SSN
Avoid SS# and the redundant SSN#.
sociocultural
sororities
See fraternities/sororities.
spacing
(for copy editing) delete double spaces throughout
state names
Spell out in straight copy, or abbreviate where space is limited.
Always use U.S. Postal Service abbreviations in addresses. Do
not use postal abbreviations in straight copy.
Exception: For international publications, postal abbreviations
may be acceptable.
