Funded Grants

The Lindbergh Foundation recently granted Dr. Ron Jenkins, Professor, Biology $10,000 to study the habitat, along the Gulf Coast at Dauphin Island, of the endangered White Beach Spider. Samford University student, Robert Andrew (Drew) Hathaway will assist Dr. Jenkins with the project, Preservation of Arctosa sanctaerosae and Its Native Beach Habitat, by utilizing GPS/GIS technology to pin-point and map viable populations of this unique spider. Academic Excellence and Geographic Information Systems (AEGIS): $195,000
Guided Multi-Disciplinary Integration of Spatial Technologies in Higher education
The funding will allow GIS technology to be used and taught across disciplines. (AEGIS web site)

Hugh Kaul Foundation: $20,000
For additional planting of native plants

Alabama Tree Assistance Program: $2,000 (See photo below)
To plant trees in conjunction with Shades Creek Revitalization project

Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham: $20,000 (see photos below)
The Vulcan Materials Center, Friends of Shades Creek, Alabama Rivers Alliance and the Birmingham Audubon Society partnered to begin revitalizing the ecosystem surrounding the portion of Shades Creek owned by Samford University.
Educate the community and Samford Students on caring for an urban ecosystem.

The Vulcan Materials Center assisted Deborah Childs-Bowen, EdD, Director, Institute for Teaching and Student Achievement and Robin Duncan, PhD, School of Education
Planning and implementing middle school teacher development workshop in Earth Sciences June 23-27 at the VMC.
