So why do we ask for financial support from our listeners?

WVSU is a non-commercial station, meaning we are not-for-profit and do not generate revenue from advertising in the way most (commercial) radio stations do. We are owned and operated by Samford University, a private institution which receives no state funding. While WVSU is often thought of as a "public" radio station, technically we are independent from National Public Radio, and do not receive any government support. So, our funding comes primarily from Samford University, with additional support from local businesses (See: Underwriting) and our listeners.

Samford funds our daily, routine operations. But any projects beyond that (the costs of replacing equipment in this case) come from donations. These gifts to WVSU are tax-deductible.

Listener donations to WVSU have helped to make us one of Birmingham's favorite alternatives to the one-size-fits-all approach to corporate, commercial radio. Not only do those funds help our programming, but we are also able to employ students, giving them on-the-job training to serve them after college, whether it's in radio or any career that requires good communication skills.

Since our first fundraiser in 2000, WVSU has:

  • increased its broadcast power
  • replaced and updated the hardware and software used to power the station
  • brought live jazz music to Birmingham
  • employed and trained student broadcasters
  • developed this website, offering our broadcast via the internet free to our listeners
  • sent listeners to music festivals in Destin, Nashville, Montgomery and Birmingham
What do we do with your contribution?
