Samford alumni periodically
have met together to renew acquaintances, share a meal and raise support
for their alma mater for at least 137 years. In January 1866, then-Howard
College and Marion, Ala., welcomed Samuel Sterling Sherman, former
college president, home at the close of the Civil War. By 1870, the
alumni association had elected officers and inaugurated an official
annual reunion of alumni that included a banquet in connection with
spring commencement ceremonies.

In 1919, a fall reunion was
held for the first time in conjunction with a Bulldogs football game.
The traditions of both a fall homecoming and a banquet at spring commencement
continued through 1992.
In 2003, Samford renewed the tradition of an alumni banquet and invited
alumni and their families to come home for a weekend of reunions,
banquets and football to celebrate Samford’s glorious past and
exciting future.
