Goals and Objectives for the Samford University Strategic Plan

Goal 6: Practice stewardship to ensure resources are strong for present and future generations

  • Objective 6.1 - Promote a culture of philanthropy among all constituents
    • Expand service and experiential learning opportunities
    • Identify and coordinate service opportunities that support our mission of faith and learning
    • Celebrate and communicate institutional successes and the achievements of our students, faculty, staff, and alumni
    • Develop additional mechanisms for students to share their Samford stories
    • Promote campus and environmental sustainability through initiatives, incentives, and programs
    • Better transition our current students into supportive alumni and expand their opportunities for positive and continued engagement with the university
    • Nurture students to promote institutional pride and loyalty
    • Conduct evaluations of alumni who are not currently engaged with the institution to identify and address areas of concern
    • Engage current students in university fundraising and donor activities
    • Incorporate the concept of philanthropic responsibility into the educational experience
    • Increase and enhance relationships with the corporate community
    • Enhance our ability to track the accomplishments of alumni and empower each school to be able to access that information
    • Examine the roles of Trustees and Overseers to identify opportunities for their engagement in institutional stewardship initiatives

  • Objective 6.2 - Encourage prudent and fair use of resources, including personnel, facilities, and finances
    • Offer personal assessment inventories early in the Samford experience for students, faculty, and staff
    • Offer more training in productivity and learning software
    • Structure teaching loads that enhance educational experiences, enable contributions to scholarship, and promote service
    • Enhance recognition and incentives for outstanding teaching
    • Provide competitive and appropriate compensation for faculty and staff
    • Increase resources provided for professional development, travel, and grants to support the work of faculty and staff
    • Create recognition and incentives for meaningful curricular innovation
    • Enhance the financial reporting available to budget managers
    • Utilize competitive bidding and rigorous negotiation in identifying vendors
    • Promote campus and environmental sustainability through initiatives, incentives, and programs
    • Regularly analyze financial data and other indicators of fiscal stewardship and share the results with all stakeholders
    • Separate financial activities for deferred maintenance, capital improvement, and capital renewal
    • Examine course and facility scheduling to enhance the use of resources
    • Ensure the professional management of the endowment and prudent use of endowed resources
    • Develop and update a financial plan to support the larger institutional strategic plan
    • Examine the roles of Trustees and Overseers to identify opportunities for their engagement in institutional stewardship initiatives
    • Provide financial incentives to schools with strong financial management
    • Ensure the breadth of the physical environment is designed and maintained to promote learning

  • Objective 6.3 - Foster institutional pride and enhance relationships within the university community and with constituents
    • Expand service and experiential learning opportunities
    • Enhance the use of learning communities as a mechanism for learning and relationship building
    • Provide more opportunities for graduate and professional students to be engaged in the larger campus environment
    • Expand cross-cultural experiences for students and employees
    • Strengthen and expand our relationships with institutions across the globe
    • Provide opportunities for the Samford community for worship and prayer
    • Build alliances with organizations and communities, including partnerships with historically black congregations and Historically Black Colleges and Universities
    • Celebrate and communicate institutional successes and the achievements of our students, faculty, staff, and alumni

    • Provide financial incentives to schools with strong financial management

  • Objective 6.5 - Align institutional resources with strategic goals and objectives
    • Increase scholarship funding to enhance our ability to recruit academically competitive students
    • Increase endowed funds to support international and intercultural programs
    • Enhance recognition and incentives for outstanding teaching
    • Provide competitive and appropriate compensation for faculty and staff
    • Increase resources provided for professional development, travel, and grants to support the work of faculty and staff
    • Create recognition and incentives for meaningful curricular innovation
    • Enhance the financial reporting available to budget managers
    • Regularly analyze financial data and other indicators of fiscal stewardship and share the results with all stakeholders
    • Increase the number of endowed faculty positions
    • Develop and update a financial plan to support the larger institutional strategic plan
    • Identify and pursue new and enhanced revenue opportunities
    • Examine the roles of Trustees and Overseers to identify opportunities for their engagement in institutional stewardship initiatives
    • Provide financial incentives to schools with strong financial management
    • Assure continued access for all students, regardless of means, through a strong program of financial aid
    • Ensure the breadth of the physical environment is designed and maintained to promote learning
