Caribbean
Samford in the Caribbean – Dr. Jennifer Rahn, 4 credits
GEOG 490: Special Topics in Geography/IDSC 201: Scientific Methods
Dates: January 1 – 15, 2009
Study geography on the Caribbean island of SABA/Antilles/The Netherlands! Learn about geolocation technologies like you never have before. Field trips and projects will be directed towards identifying local areas where environmental concerns exist. Some students will work on an underwater research project towards the end of the course. All students will complete PADI Open Water SCUBA certification.

Costa Rica
Samford in Costa Rica – Dr. Myralyn Allgood, 4 credits
SPAN 202: Intermediate Spanish II/SPAN 351: Advanced Spanish I/ SPAN 352: Advanced Spanish II/ SPAN 450: Special Studies
Dates: January 2 - 24, 2009
Spend Jan Term studying Spanish in beautiful Costa Rica, escorted by Samford professors and hosted by the private language school Centro Linguistica Conversa. Program features home stays with local families, small interactive classes taught by native speakers at Conversa’s mountainside campus, PBL activities and service learning opportunities. Afternoons and weekends free to travel with the group or explore the sites on your own.

London
Samford in London: Students may only register for one session but may travel independently the other session

COST: $2,750 program fee (does not include tuition): roundtrip airfare from Atlanta, GA, airport transfers to and from the study centre and accommodations with continental breakfast each morning, one group day trip outside of London, a London Pass for a day of sightseeing discounts, and class activities per selection of the professor.
TUITION: Billed at the on-campus tuition rate for 2008-2009: $645 per credit hour

Peruvian Amazon: Biology
BIOL 340: Amazon Rainforest – Dr. Larry Davenport, 4 credits.

Peru: Business/Political Science
ECON/POLS 394: Peru: International Studies in Economics: Poverty and Economic Development--Dr. Fred Shepherd, 4 credits, no prerequisites

This course offers cross-disciplinary introduction to the scope, causes, and consequences of poverty. The various measures of poverty as well as basic economic theory explaining differences in income, wealth, and economic growth among regions will be examined. Emphasis will be placed on poverty issues from a Christian perspective. The course relies heavily on service through a variety of anti-poverty projects including local faith based organizations and international nonprofit agencies.
