Duties

The Director of Legal Services is a member of the professional staff reporting to the General Counsel and provides legal research and analysis to support the General Counsel.  The individual in this position: (1) possesses advanced knowledge associated with the professional practice of law; (2) applies associated theories, methods, principles, and practices; (3) performs associated duties that are predominantly intellectual and varied in nature, requiring creative, analytical, evaluative, interpretive, and/or critical thinking; and (4) exercises discretion and independent judgment, requiring only general supervision for day-to-day tasks.

Duties include:

  • Provide advice and legal counsel on general issues of higher education law, such as contract law and business law, ADA, Title IX, HIPAA, Clery Act and other areas of regulatory compliance.
  • Preparation of materials and provision of educational training on legal issues to University administrators and others in the University community.
  • Review, draft, and negotiate contracts, real estate transactions, and other legal agreements
    • Provide legal advice related to records requests, subpoenas and court orders directed to the University
    • Assist with University response to investigations conducted by law enforcement and regulatory entities
    • Review and analyze proposed legislation affecting the University and provide testimony and other support to the University
    • Provide legal advice on issues relating to gifts and bequests made to the University
    • Provide research and analysis on legal issues concerning Samford University, including but not limited to the following:
      • Federal and state laws and regulations (particularly those impacting institutions of higher education)
      • Intellectual property issues including trademark and copyright issues
      • Employment law, including benefits issues
      • Immigration law
      • Corporate law
      • EEOC and civil rights law
      • University-wide policies and procedures
      • Faculty issues
      • Student issues

Required Qualifications

  • A Juris Doctor from an accredited law school
  • License to practice law in the State of Alabama
  • Experience working with complex legal issues is required (3-5 years minimum)
  • Demonstrated job-related experience is required
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills (recent professional writing sample is required)
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects and initiatives, in some cases with short timeframes for response
  • Excellent research skills
