All materials and staff will be relocated to the new addition (the north wing) and the former Law Library. Friends of the Samford University Library was organized this year to complement the ongoing support of the University. Special Announcement -- Library Closing

The Davis Library will be closed the week of May 26 - May 30.

This will allow library staff to concentrate efforts to prepare for the renovation project. Large portions of the collection will be relocated and staff offices moved. It is anticipated that some of this effort will continue into the following days but normal services will resume on June 2. Maps to assist patrons during the renovation period are attached to this newsletter.

Regular hours will resume on Monday, June 2.
Your patience is appreciated.

Renovation News

A major renovation project is planned for the Harwell G. Davis Library Building which houses the main Samford University Library. This renovation will complete the library plans begun in 1993 when the north wing was added to the building. During the construction all materials and staff will be relocated to the new addition and the former Law Library. Some moving of materials has already begun in preparation for the project. Pre-1980 periodicals were moved during Spring Break.

The Special Collection, Government Documents, and the Technical Services of the Library will be located in the former Law Library. Circulation, reference, multimedia, and periodicals will be in the north wing (addition). Off site storage will be limited to materials from Special Collection. The Library Staff hopes to keep disruptions to a minimum with good signage and staff located in appropriate locations for assistance.

Friends of the Samford University Library

Friends of the Samford University Library was organized to enhance existing and planned library resources and programs. The Library has received many worthy gifts through the years that have enabled it to grow to its current status. By establishing the Friends, we are seeking to organize the wide base of support necessary for developing and sustaining a scholarly library. Anyone may become a Friend of the Library by making a gift of at least $100. A donor may give a monetary gift in honor or in memory of a person, whose name then will be affixed to a bookplate. A contribution of $1,500 will purchase a book a year in perpetuity in the name of the donor or in honor or memory of someone the donor designates. For additional information see the Friends web page at http://davisweb.samford.edu/about/friends.html-ssi.

New Library Web Pages

Check out the Library's new web pages. You will find information about the library, access to research information and tools, and access to SAM (the online catalog). The web page simplifies access to SAM by automatically starting a terminal session to the catalog system. Coming soon is the ability to request delivery of materials, reference information, and library instruction classes, and to place reserves and orders for materials. Appreciation to the library's web team: Ed Cherry, Catherine Evans, and Donna Fitch. The URL is http://www.samford.edu/library/

RIT/USA Today Quality Cup

The Quality Cup recognizes teams that dramatically improve the quality of service provided and groups that use teamwork and the principles of TQM to cut costs, solve problems, and increase efficiency. Computer Laboratory News

Eric Williamson Departs - If you have had occasion to visit one of Samford's general access computer labs (or send your students to them) during the past year, you have benefited from the efforts of Eric Williamson who was our Computer Lab Manager. Eric has accepted another opportunity in the Birmingham area and is no longer with Samford. We appreciate all that Eric contributed to the labs and wish him the best in his future endeavors. Until a new lab manager is hired, please continue to place lab related telephone calls to 2108.
