During the Spring 2011 semester, the Mann Center conducted research on academic integrity at Samford. Research was conducted in conjunction with the International Center for Academic Integrity (ICAI), using a well-validated instrument that has been used for more than 20 years at over 200 institutions of higher education.
Academic dishonesty is about as prevalent at Samford as at other institutions nationally.
There is great disparity between student and faculty definitions of cheating.
There is no single recognized source of information on academic integrity at Samford.
Samford students are unlikely to take any action when they witness cheating.
Given these findings, the Mann Center is promoting dialogue on academic integrity across campus with faculty, students, and administrators. Initiatives include:
An online academic integrity resource center, with helpful materials for students, faculty, and parents.
Appointment of a student advisory board to further identify opportunities for student-focused programming and resources.
Conversations with faculty and students across campus. On October 6th, 2011, 150 students participated in a panel discussion titled Courageous Conversations: Cheating at Samford. On September 20th, 2012, more than 400 freshmen attended Courageous Conversations: When Winning is Losing, a conversation led entirely by upperclassmen. Discussions with faculty in Samford's eight schools are ongoing.
Development of resources for instructors of freshman classes, and advice and resources for the University Senate Committee on Academic Integrity.
Ongoing collaboration with ICAI to identify best practices at other institutions, develop a Southeastern regional academic integrity consortium and facilitate a 2013 regional conference at Samford. Additionally, Mann Center program manager Azalea Hulbert presented at the 2013 ICAI conference in San Antonio, sharing insights into the center's work to date.
Production of Samford-specific videos on issues related to academic integrity, and creation of an ad campaign to raise student awareness.
