The Healthcare Ethics and Law Institute at Samford University is an interdisciplinary center designed to support ethical decision-making in healthcare settings. The Institute hosts an annual conference where the Pellegrino Medal is awarded to recognized thought leaders in the field of healthcare. Samford faculty from across the university are also given the opportunity to present at the conference.
At the 2013 conference, Mann Center program manager Azalea Hulbert and Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing faculty member Jennifer Coleman facilitated a session titled "Better World Theatre: Teaching Ethics through the Arts." Samford students Kristin Aebli, Helen Degree, Cat Forman, Claire Gaxiola, Noor Hussein, Libby McCully, and Christina Witt participated in the session as actors and discussion leaders.
At the 2009 HEAL Conference, Mann Center Director Dr. John Knapp presented on "Self-Deception, Medical Practice and the Eclipse of Spirituality" and in 2010, spoke on “Ethics Code Design: Emerging Best Practices."
During the 2012 conference, Dr. Knapp interviewed Dr. John Lantos, one of the 2012 Pellegrino medalists. Similar interviews with other thought leaders are available here.
