The 2013-2014 Samford Arts season opens with a free, month-long exhibition of recent artwork by the university’s visual arts faculty. The works, in various media, will be on display through September 30 in Samford University Art Gallery
, with a public reception in the gallery 5-7 p.m. Sept. 10.
Exhibiting faculty artists include Mary Ann Culotta, Richard Dendy, Scott Fisk, Shannon Flynt, Don Rankin, Robin Snyder, Larry Thompson, Lowell Vann and Mary White.
In addition to his individual artwork, Visual Arts Department
chair Thompson presents an international collaborative work with a host of other student and faculty artists. The work, titled “21 Days, 22 Artists,” required each artist to make a single photo with a disposable film camera and pass the camera along to the next artist with only a few notes about that image. The next artist responded visually to those notes but did not see the previous image. The project, created in London, Paris, Venice and Florence, defies the ubiquitous current practice of instant reviewing of photographs and post-production of images.
Samford Art Gallery hours are 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
