State Science Olympiad at Samford April 17

Sixteen high school science teams will compete at Samford University Saturday (APRIL 17) in the state Science Olympiad finals. The two winning teams will represent Alabama at the national Science Olympiad at Juniata College, Huntingdon, Pa., May 21-24.

Each of the 16 teams qualified for the state finals by winning district competitions held in five geographic regions earlier this year.

Science Olympiad competition consists of individual and team events representing the disciplines of biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, computers and technology.

The public is invited to observe the events. Opening ceremonies begin at 8:45 a.m. in Seibert Hall. Events, ranging from bottle rocket launches to robot building, take place throughout the day in various buildings and locations on campus. The closing ceremony and awards presentation will be at 4:45 p.m. in Seibert Hall.

Competing teams are: Bayside Academy, Daphne; Alabama School of Math and Science, Mobile; Geneva High School, Geneva; Loveless AMP, Montgomery; Auburn High School, Auburn; Randolph School (two teams), Huntsville; UMS-Wright Preparatory, Mobile; Trinity Presbyterian, Montgomery; Sparkman High School, Harvest; St. James School, Montgomery; Oak Mountain High School, Birmingham; Sand Rock High School, Sand Rock; Spain Park High School, Hoover; John Carroll Catholic High School, Birmingham; and Muscle Shoals High School, Muscle Shoals.
