A total of 75 rising high school seniors from 21 counties will arrive at Samford University Sunday afternoon (JUNE 16) for Alabama Governor's School. The two-week honors program for academically talented students will begin with a 2:45 p.m. opening ceremony in Harrison Theatre.

During AGS, participants select major and minor areas of coursework. Major course topics include the legal process, American healthcare, research science, arts, television news production, magazine publishing, photography and Alabama heroes. Minor course topics include web design, biomedical engineering, a study of Euripedes' Greek tragedy Medea, Southern culture, business marketing and Birmingham's urban geography, during which students will explore the history and architecture of the city.

Special events include a trip to the McWane Center on Saturday, June 22, followed by visits to the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, Jazz Hall of Fame, Civil Rights Institute and the Art Museum. AGS students will also attend a Birmingham Steeldogs football game.

A special dinner program on Tuesday, June 25, will feature a tour of Samford's new planetarium and a talk by Bill Pannell, Air Launch Study Project Manager, National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

Closing ceremony will be Friday, June 28, at 10 a.m. in Harrison Theatre.
