Longtime Samford University religion professor Dr. Sigurd Bryan has been named director of Samford Sunday. The program matches Alabama Baptist churches with ministerial students who visit the church to preach during the worship hour on a "Samford Sunday."

Dr. Bryan retired from the Samford religion faculty in May after 46 years in the classroom. He succeeds Dr. Earl Potts, executive secretary-treasurer, emeritus, Alabama Baptist State Convention, as Samford Sunday director.

"I can think of no better person to follow Earl Potts as director of Samford Sunday than Sigurd Bryan,"said Dr. James R. Barnette, Minister to the University.

"Dr. Bryan is one of the most beloved figures both at Samford and among Alabama Baptists. His life, teaching and preaching have impacted generations of ministers. He is, without question, the right person to serve Samford Sunday at this moment of its rich history," said Dr. Barnette.

For many years, Dr. Bryan has served as interim pastor, supply preacher and Winter Bible Study teacher at Baptist churches throughout Alabama. A 1946 Samford graduate, Dr. Bryan holds bachelor of divinity and doctor of theology degrees from Southern Baptist Theological seminary, Louisville, Ky.

Samford Sunday began in 1948 as "Howard College Day" to help aspiring young ministers prepare for future ministry. Each Sunday during the fall and spring semesters, many Alabama Baptist churches open their pulpits for Samford ministerial students.

About 40 students participate in the program each semester.
