Samford University will join the Alabama Sports Foundation, Jacksonville State University and Troy State University to host the 2000 Trans America Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Championship. The tournament, which sends its champion to the NCAA Basketball Championship, will be played at the Pelham Civic Complex on March 8-11, 2000.
Samford head coach Janet Cone is looking forward to showcasing her third year program. "Hosting the tournament is quite an honor for a relatively new program such as Samford's. It will give basketball fans in the Birmingham area a chance to see some fine women's college basketball."
"The Alabama Sports Foundation is excited to have the opportunity to highlight women's basketball with this championship. . . .we expect an outstanding tournament," said Gene Hallman, Executive Director of the Alabama Sports Foundation. "The Pelham Civic Complex is the perfect venue for an event of this type, and we know that the City of Pelham will act as a great ambassador to the TAAC teams."
Five of the TAAC members (Samford, JSU, Troy State, Mercer and Georgia State) are within 200 miles of the Pelham Civic Complex.
The Tournament will, for the first time, feature all ten TAAC women's teams.
Members of the TAAC are:
Alabama - Samford, Jacksonville State and Troy State
Georgia - Mercer and Georgia State
Florida - Jacksonville, Stetson, Central Florida and Florida Atlantic
