Soprano Susan Patterson will be guest soloist for Samford University's 1999 Festival of Christmas Music Friday, Dec. 3, at 7:30 p.m. in Wright Center Concert Hall.
Patterson, who has sung leading roles with major opera houses in the U.S. and Europe, will sing the soprano solos in the "Gloria" by Francis Poulenc. The piece is widely considered to be one of the major works for chorus and orchestra written in this century.
A Samford graduate from Birmingham, Patterson has appeared with the San Francisco Opera, Chicago Lyric Opera, the Opera Theater of Saint Louis and the New York City Opera. She made her debut with the Metropolitan Opera in 1998. Her European appearances include the famed La Scala in Milan, the Opera-Comique in Paris, the Netherlands Opera, the Danish Opera, the Cologne Opera and the English National Opera in London.
The Samford festival will also feature a 160-voice choir comprised of members of the Samford A Cappella Choir, University Chorale and MasterSingers, along with the Samford Orchestra. Samford School of Music Dean Milburn Price will conduct.
The first half of the concert will include the A Cappella Choir conducted by Price, and University Chorale conducted by Timothy Banks. The groups will sing choral selections for the Christmas season.
Tickets are $10. Proceeds will benefit the music scholarship fund. All seating is reserved. For information, call the Samford School of Music at 726-2778.
