The Samford University A Cappella Choir will present its annual home concert on Friday, April 7, at 7:30 p.m. in Reid Chapel. The public is invited free of charge. The event will conclude the choir's four-state spring performance tour.
This year's musical program develops the theme, "The Life of Jesus in Choral Music." In addressing different aspects of the theme (the prophecies of His birth, His birth, teachings, death and resurrection and ultimate reign), the 57-voice choir will sing music spanning a variety of styles.
Selections range from a Renaissance motet by the Spanish composer Tomas Luis da Vittoria to an excerpt from Dave Brubeck's jazz oratorio, Light in the Wilderness. The concert will also include choral music by Heinrich Schutz, Orlando Gibbons, F. Melius Christiansen, Maurice Durufle, Pablo Casals, Arvo Part and Moses Hogan.
Milburn Price, Dean of the Samford School of Music, conducts the choir. He serves as Alabama's first national president of the 20,000-member American Choral Directors Association, and represents the U.S. on the Board of Directors of the International Federation of Choral Music.
