Jazz saxophonist Boney James and trumpeter Rick Braun will bring their collaborative sound to Samford University's Wright Center Concert Hall Tuesday, June 27, at 7:30 p.m.
The concert will feature music from their recently-released CD, Shake It Up. The CD features 10 tracks that span an array of moods, emotions and musical genres, mixing a blend of pop, soul, Latin, funk and jazz. The recording includes the pair's take on the Hugh Masekela pop instrumental "Grazin' in the Grass." As of June 11, their version is the number one smooth jazz hit in America, according to Radio and Records.
Shake It Up is the result of James and Braun's chance meeting as session players about eight years ago. They then made a few guest appearances on each other's solo records, racking up three No. 1 its in the process: "Boneyizm" (from Body Language), "Groovis" (from Beat Street) and "Notorious" (from Body and Soul).
The Birmingham concert, part of a worldwide summer tour in support of Shake It Up, is sponsored by Samford jazz radio station WVSU 91.1 FM and Bayer Properties.
Tickets are $30, $25 and $20, and are available at all Ticketmaster centers and online at www.ticketmaster.com. To charge tickets by phone, call (205) 715-6000.
