One of Samford's newest School of the Arts faculty members, Jared Ballance, will perform April 3 at 7:30 p.m. in Brock Recital Hall.
The recital, which includes Ruth Marie Ballance, violin, and Sarana Chou, piano, will feature five works:
• Lullaby for Violin and Cello (R.Clarke)
• Suite No. 3 in C Major for Solo Cello, BWV 109 (J.S. Bach)
• Drei Kleine Stucke, Op. 11 (A.W. Massige)
• Duo for Violin and Cello (E. Schulhoff)
• Limerock (M. O’Connor)
Ballance is an extremely versatile musician and teacher, performing frequently as a chamber musician, recitalist, soloist and orchestral musician. His performance of Klaus Roy’s Serenade for Solo Cello at the composer’s 80th birthday concert was praised by the Cleveland Plain Dealer for its “poetic and dramatic panache”.
In addition to performing standard repertoire, Ballance has been very active working with composers and performing contemporary music. He organized and performed in a concert of the twelve solo cello pieces written for Paul Sacher’s 75th birthday, and has performed Schubert’s “Trout” Quintet with members of the Cleveland Orchestra. He is the cellist of the Samford String Quartet, a member of the Ballance Duo with Ruth Marie Ballance, and the Brandywine Trio.
