HC BonfireFamilies will find lots to do during Samford University's 2012 homecoming weekend Oct. 12-14, according to David B. Goodwin, Samford's director of alumni programs.

The annual homecoming bash on Friday will feature a pep rally, bonfire and street festival. The event is cosponsored by the Samford Alumni Association and Student Government Association. Festivities begin at 8 p.m. in the parking lot adjacent to Seibert Stadium. While there is no cost for the event, there will be concessions available for purchase.

On Saturday, the annual Thomas E. and Marla H. Corts Homecoming Parade begins at 10:30 a.m. and winds its way through the campus. The parade will feature bands, floats and dignitaries. Families can enjoy watching the parade from several locations, although Sherman Circle always is a popular viewing area, Goodwin said.

Following the parade, families can enjoy tailgating and other activities on the University Quad. Many organizations provide games, face painting and other family-friendly activities. Reunion gatherings may require advance reservations and payment, Goodwin noted. Lunch also will be served in the Beeson University Center dining hall.

One of the reunion gatherings Saturday will be a 90th anniversary celebration for the Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing. Alumni and their families are invited to participate in the barbecue lunch and activities on the plaza outside the Beeson Center for Healing Arts.

Football is on the homecoming schedule at 2 p.m. Saturday when the Bulldogs battle Southern Conference rival Appalachian State University. Tickets are available at http://www.samfordsports.com/. Pregame and halftime festivities include reunion recognitions, the Samford Marching Band and crowning of the 2012 homecoming queen and king.

The Samford basketball teams also are planning a special event on Friday evening, although details have not yet been announced. The women's basketball team - the defending Southern Conference champions - will host their annual Red and Blue Scrimmage at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

Two worship events are open to families. A vespers service is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Friday in Hodges Chapel and will feature the Samford A Cappella Choir and alumni leadership. The annual Samford Hymn Sing is at 2 p.m. Sunday in Reid Chapel.

The Samford bookstore also will have extended hours during homecoming weekend, and the store is stocking new items for Samford fans of all ages.

Other activities are being added to the homecoming schedule frequently, Goodwin said, and alumni, parents and friends should continue to check the online schedule regularly for updates.
