Posted on 2008-12-19 by Mary Wimberley (205) 726-2922

Many Samford University students will begin 2009 by pursuing international travel and study during the school's Jan Term. Some will ring in the New Year at Samford's London Study Centre in England.

Jan Term study sites include Peru, for study of the Amazon Rainforest and the nation's politics and economy, Jan. 5-15; the Caribbean, for special topics in geography and scientific methods, Jan. 1-15; and Italy, for an in-depth study of Eternal Rome, Jan. 3-20.

Thirteen Spanish majors will engage in a three-week language and culture immersion at Costa Rica's Centro Linguistico Conversa Jan. 2-24. In addition to daily Spanish classes, they will live with host families, explore the country's natural wonders and engage in service learning projects at a local school, a retirement center and a nature conservancy agency.

The Daniel House, Samford's residential London Study Centre will be home base for two groups of students in January.

Students in Session I, Dec. 27-Jan. 11, will study international business, literary observation, British culture, and love and marriage in Britain. On New Year's Eve, they plan to observe the fireworks display on the Thames River, the equivalent of welcoming the New Year in New York City's Times Square.

Those in Session II, Jan. 11-Jan. 23, will study British culture, Winston Churchill and World War II, nursing in the British Isles, and a multi-disciplinary study of London history, politics and media.

Students enrolled in Jan Term courses on the Samford campus begin classes on Monday, Jan. 5. Samford's Cumberland School of Law students will begin their spring semester classes on Jan. 5.
