Samford Democrats To Present Lecture Series

Posted on 2008-09-19 by Sean Flynt (205) 726-4197

The Samford Democrats student association will begin a lecture series on Monday, Sept. 22 starting at 6 p.m. in Brock Forum.

The first lecturer will be former Alabama State Attorney General and Lieutenant Governor Bill Baxley. The Birmingham attorney will discuss the Civil Rights Movement and how it transformed the political landscape in the American South. He had a unique role in the movement, as he prosecuted Robert Chambliss for the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church Bombing of 1963. He was also the first Democratic candidate for Governor to lose the race since 1872. He was the youngest Attorney General ever to be elected in the State of Alabama.

U.S. Congressman Artur Davis will speak on Monday, Oct. 27.

University of Alabama law professor and Beeson Divinity School alumna Susan Pace Hamill will speak on Monday, Nov. 10.
