Samford University pharmacy professor Kim Benner, Pharm.D., BCPS, FASHP, was recently chosen to serve as a pediatric therapeutics evaluator for a National Institutes of Health initiative.

Dr. Benner is among 22 experts from around the country who were selected to serve as evaluators for the 2010-11 Best Pharmaceuticals for Children Act (BPCA) Priority List of Needs in Pediatric Therapeutics.  The program is a component of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.

The panel’s task was to evaluate and prioritize applications for NIH funding. The process, which involved assessing some 67 nominations on the basis of evidence, impact and population, was completed in November.

Benner was nominated for the panel by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, which she serves as chair of its Council on Therapeutics.

She is a professor of pharmacy practice at Samford’s McWhorter School of Pharmacy and pediatric clinical pharmacy specialist at Children’s Health System in Birmingham.
