WVSU To Hold 'Listener Support Days' Sept. 9-11

Posted by Mary Wimberley on 2004-09-03

Samford University's WVSU-FM 91.1 will conduct its annual fundraiser, "Listener Support Days," Sept. 9-11. The three-day effort will seek to raise financial support from WVSU listeners who appreciate the station's 24-hour smooth jazz format.

Donated funds, says station general manager Andy Parrish, are critical to the success of the station. "Tax deductible donations help the station maintain and upgrade broadcasting equipment, pay for station programming, and help us produce special events such as jazz concerts," said Parrish, who was named manager of the 500-watt station earlier this year.

WVSU, Birmingham's only full time smooth jazz station, is funded jointly by Samford, the business community through the underwriting of programming, and listener donations.

The fundraiser will begin at 7 a.m. Thursday (SEPT. 9) and end at 3 p.m. on Saturday (SEPT. 11). Student volunteers will answer calls from prospective donors. As a special thank you to listeners, WVSU will air special programming during that time. Features will include interviews with noted smooth jazz artists Boney James, Diana Krall and others, local jazz favorites Eric Essix, Tekneek and Ona Watson, and representatives of local businesses that support WVSU.

New student staff members, who receive valuable on-the-job training in communication skills, will be introduced, and Parrish also expects to announce some new on-air programs and a station initiative that will enhance listener interaction with the station.

WVSU, with an on-campus studio and a transmitter atop Shades Mountain, reaches most of the metro Birmingham area and much of Shelby County.

WVSU fans wishing to make a pledge may call (205) 726-2877 or (205) 726-2934, or pledge online.
