Posted by Mary Wimberley on 2004-09-01

U.S. Army sergeant Mary Smothers will address Samford University students Thursday (SEPT. 2) at 10 a.m. in Reid Chapel.

Sgt. Smothers, a Samford senior history major from Talladega, recently served a year with the Army's 214th Military Company, patrolling the streets of Baghdad and helping to train Iraqi police officers. She was called to duty in March, 2003, two months before she was to graduate from Samford, but is enrolled in classes again this fall and plans to graduate in December.

During her talk, Smothers will discuss her experiences in Iraq and share how her service affected her faith. Her presentation is part of the school’s regular convocation series.
